In the early hours of January 25, 2017, the life of 39-year-old Jasmin Rochelle Haley, an African-American woman, was tragically cut short in her Las Vegas, Nevada home. Her roommate discovered her body in their residence on Morning Mist Drive and immediately alerted the authorities. Responding officers and medical personnel pronounced her deceased at the scene, having sustained multiple gunshot wounds.
The Clark County coroner's office officially ruled her death a homicide.
Investigations by the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department revealed that a small gathering had taken place at the residence shortly before Haley's death. Among those present were Haley, her roommate, a man named Jason Tureaud, and another individual identified as Lun Simon, who was known to be Haley's methamphetamine dealer. According to police reports, Haley's roommate and another couple left the gathering, leaving Haley, Simon, and Tureaud at the house.
A crucial witness account from Tureaud painted a tense picture of the moments leading up to the fatal shooting. He reported seeing Simon in the kitchen with Haley, appearing agitated and pacing back and forth. Tureaud then heard the sound of two gunshots. Following the gunshots, he saw Haley on the kitchen floor and witnessed Lun Simon silently exiting the residence. The motive for the shooting was not immediately clear to investigators.
On February 8, 2017, the primary suspect in the case, 43-year-old Lun Simon, turned himself in to the authorities at a business on Boulder Highway. He was subsequently arrested and booked at the Clark County Detention Center. Simon faced charges of murder with a deadly weapon and burglary while in possession of a firearm.
