In the early hours of March 2, 2023, the life of a 24-year-old Black woman, Dyamond Hamilton, was tragically cut short in her Las Vegas apartment. An aspiring rapper known as "90 Splitz," Hamilton had moved from Norfolk, Virginia, to pursue her music career, a journey she had embarked on with hope and ambition. The vibrant young artist's path came to a violent end on her own bedroom floor, where she was discovered with multiple gunshot wounds.
The tragedy unfolded in her home at the Vista Del Valle Apartments on West Viking Road, a place that should have been her sanctuary.
The sole suspect in her death was her 28-year-old roommate, Virgil Mack. The conflict that led to the fatal shooting reportedly stemmed from Hamilton's desire for Mack to move out of the apartment, which was in her name. She had given him a 30-day notice to vacate, but the situation escalated into a heated argument. On the night of the incident, Hamilton had returned home with a friend when the dispute with Mack erupted. Shortly after she walked back to her room, a barrage of about 10 shots was heard. It was Mack himself who called 911, admitting to shooting his roommate.
Following the call, police arrested Virgil Mack at the apartment. He claimed he had acted in self-defense, alleging that Hamilton had been armed with a gun. However, this account was contradicted by the witness who was present, who stated they never saw Hamilton holding a weapon. Investigators also reported that the evidence collected at the scene did not align with Mack's self-defense narrative. One account from Hamilton's mother states that her daughter was shot 17 times in the back as she was walking away. When a 911 dispatcher attempted to instruct Mack on how to provide medical aid to Hamilton, he refused to help her.
Initially held without bail, Mack was charged with open murder. In a development that stunned Hamilton's family, he was later released from the Clark County Detention Center on a $150,000 bond. The pursuit of justice for Dyamond Hamilton faced further complications and delays. While out on bail, in September 2025, Virgil Mack was arrested in Texas after a police chase. This arrest was for a separate murder that had occurred at a convenience store in Louisiana. This new, serious charge against Mack has indefinitely postponed the trial for Hamilton's murder, leaving her family in a painful state of limbo as they continue to wait for justice for the young life that was taken.
