In the spring of 2025, a young Black man, 21-year-old Malik Jashun Wilson, lost his life in a fatal shooting in Oklahoma City. The incident, which marked the city's 17th homicide of the year, unfolded on the evening of April 2nd at an apartment complex near Northwest 16th Street and North Classen Boulevard. Emergency services responded to multiple 911 calls reporting gunfire and discovered Wilson outside an apartment with gunshot wounds.
He was quickly transported to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
The investigation into the shooting led Oklahoma City police to several individuals. Mareon Walter, who was 20 years old at the time, was present at the scene and told investigators that he and Wilson were attempting to purchase marijuana when they were robbed. GPS data from an ankle monitor Walter was wearing confirmed his location at the time of the incident. In the days following the shooting, detectives arrested Walter on a complaint of first-degree murder, and his bond was set at $10 million.
Further investigation and evidence from the scene, including a cigarette butt and blood droplets, pointed to another suspect, John Calvin Moore. DNA analysis linked Moore to the evidence found at the apartment. Investigators also discovered images on Moore's social media accounts showing him in a distinctive hoodie that was found at the crime scene. Additionally, a black Mercedes SUV registered to Moore's wife matched the description of a vehicle seen near the location of the shooting. Moore was subsequently arrested on April 9, 2025, and charged with first-degree murder. A third person of interest, Damein Marqual Nelson, also known as 'DJ Dropit,' was identified as a suspect but remained at large.
