In the winter of 2024, a life was tragically cut short in Ruston, Louisiana. Charvaz Crawford, a 23-year-old African American man, was fatally shot on the afternoon of Thursday, December 26th. The incident unfolded around 1:30 p.m. at the Cinnamon Square Apartments located off South Farmerville Street, where police were dispatched following reports of gunfire.
Upon their arrival, officers discovered that a gunshot victim had already been transported to the Northern Louisiana Medical
Center. At the hospital, the victim was identified as Charvaz Crawford. He had sustained a gunshot wound to the chest and, despite medical efforts, succumbed to his injury. The news of his death cast a somber shadow over the community as investigators began the arduous task of piecing together the events that led to the fatal shooting.
The Ruston Police Department launched an intensive investigation that continued through the night and into the following day. Their efforts quickly yielded results, leading to the apprehension of three local teenagers in connection with Crawford's death. The day after the shooting, investigators executed a search warrant which led to the arrest of 17-year-old Yanni Potts. Potts was subsequently charged with second-degree murder.
In addition to the primary suspect, two other teenagers were taken into custody. Eighteen-year-olds Jailin M. Jones and Omari Lee Johnson were arrested and charged with obstruction of justice. Authorities alleged that both Jones and Johnson were involved in concealing evidence related to the shooting. They were booked at the Lincoln Parish Detention Center with bail set at $10,000 each. While arrests have been made, the investigation remains ongoing as authorities continue to seek a full understanding of the circumstances and motive behind the shooting that ended Charvaz Crawford's life.
