In the late afternoon of Sunday, February 23, 2025, the quiet of a neighborhood in Independence, Missouri, was shattered by a reported shooting. When officers from the Independence Police Department arrived at the home in the 9700 block of East Winner Road, they were met with a tense and uncertain situation. Initial reports suggested that there were injured individuals inside and that an armed person was refusing to surrender.
The gravity of the circumstances prompted the deployment of
the SWAT team. Upon entering the residence, they discovered a tragic scene. Two men were found deceased, both victims of gun violence. One of the men was identified as 35-year-old Ernest Naler of Kansas City. The other victim was 41-year-old Steven Ray Johnson from Excelsior Springs.
Inside the home, authorities also located another man. He was taken into custody and transported to a local hospital to be treated for injuries that were not considered life-threatening. However, a few days later, this individual was released from custody as the investigation into the double homicide continued.
In the immediate aftermath, law enforcement officials assured the public that they did not believe there was an ongoing threat to the community. However, the circumstances surrounding the deaths of Ernest Naler and Steven Johnson remained unclear. As of late February 2025, no charges had been filed in connection with the case, and the investigation was still active. There have been no subsequent public announcements regarding any arrests, suspects, or the filing of charges in this case.
