In a moment of sudden violence on a late January morning in Independence, Missouri, 38-year-old Timothy A. Phillips was shot and killed. The incident, which unfolded just before 10:30 a.m. on January 13, 2022, took place in the 300 block of North Leslie Avenue. Phillips was seated in his vehicle when a dark-colored SUV pulled alongside. An argument erupted between Phillips and another man, escalating a recent dispute that had already been brewing.
A witness to the tragic event, who had
just shared a hug with Phillips, recounted that as the two men appeared ready to fight, the rear window of the SUV was rolled down. A handgun was then brandished, and several shots were fired, striking Phillips. The SUV immediately fled the scene. Emergency services arrived to find Phillips suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. He was rushed to Centerpoint Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries two days later.
The investigation quickly led police to an address in Higginsville, where they located an SUV matching the description provided by the witness. At this location, they took three suspects into custody. One of the individuals, 18-year-old Brayden A. Stone of Independence, was subsequently arrested and charged in connection with the fatal shooting.
During a police interview, Stone allegedly admitted to shooting Phillips. He claimed that he had acted after Phillips produced a gun, a claim that was not substantiated by evidence at the scene, as no weapon was recovered on or near Phillips. Stone also told investigators that he had thrown his own gun out of the car window as they drove to Higginsville. Initially charged with assault, the charges against Stone were upgraded to second-degree murder, armed criminal action, and unlawful weapon use following Phillips's death.
