On March 29, 2025, a missing persons report led Kansas City police to a grim discovery at an Extended Stay motel. Inside one of the rooms, officers found the bodies of 42-year-old Marvin Sessoms, an African American male, and his 38-year-old wife, Maleeka Sessoms. Both had been fatally shot. The couple had recently embarked on a trip to visit Marvin's sister in Georgia but had unexpectedly returned to Kansas City.
A family member grew concerned and contacted the authorities after being unable to reach them.
The investigation quickly zeroed in on the couple's son, Jason Sessoms, who was 19 or 20 years old at the time. Later on the same day his parents' bodies were discovered, Jason was arrested hundreds of miles away in Covert Township, Michigan. His arrest was for unrelated charges of home invasion and resisting arrest, during which he was found to be in possession of two handguns. The couple's younger 10-year-old son was with Jason at the time and reportedly told investigators that his older brother had killed their parents.
During questioning by detectives who traveled to Michigan, Jason Sessoms initially offered a conflicting story, blaming an unidentified Hispanic man for the murders. However, he later confessed to the crime, stating that he shot his parents while they were sleeping. The alleged motive for this tragic act was his belief that his mother had stolen money from him to pay for the motel room. It was also reported that the family had been staying at the motel because Jason believed someone in Kansas City had 'put out a hit on him.'
Jason Sessoms was charged in Clay County, Missouri, with two counts of first-degree murder and two counts of armed criminal action for the deaths of his parents. He was held in Michigan on a $2 million bond for the charges there, pending his transfer back to Missouri. He was later extradited and booked into the Clay County jail, with an initial court appearance scheduled for June 27, 2025. The case remains pending in the legal system.
