In a heartbreaking turn of events, Aminah C. Johnson, a 29-year-old African American woman, and her fiancé, Derrick D. Rhodes, 31, were tragically killed in a shooting on March 31, 2025, in Kansas City, Missouri. Johnson, a mother to two young children, was also expecting a child with Rhodes.
The violence erupted near 98th and Marsh Avenue, allegedly following a dispute with acquaintances.
Family members reported that the conflict originated from a falling out with friends, one of whom had recently vandalized Johnson's home. The situation escalated, culminating in the fatal shooting of the couple. According to Johnson's mother, Desiree Johnson, the alleged shooter was someone Aminah had considered a close friend, with whom she had worked and planned trips.
Kansas City police responded to the incident and found the couple unresponsive in front of a home. They were transported to a local hospital where they succumbed to their injuries. In the immediate aftermath, authorities took one man into custody as a person of interest. However, he was later released due to a lack of sufficient evidence, and as of now, no arrests have been made in the case.
The family has been left devastated by the loss of Johnson, Rhodes, and their unborn child. Desiree Johnson has made a public plea for information and has personally offered a $5,000 reward for any information that leads to an arrest and conviction. This is in addition to the $25,000 reward offered by the TIPS Hotline. The investigation into the double homicide remains ongoing as the family hopes for justice.
