The situation escalated when Dills allegedly pistol-whipped Smith. Following this, as Dills began to walk away, Smith allegedly shot her in the stomach. Dills was rushed to a local hospital, where she ultimately succumbed to her injuries. The entire event was witnessed by several people, including children. A man at the scene, 71-year-old Thomas Jones, was grazed by a bullet during the incident and was later charged with fourth-degree assault for not complying with deputies' commands.
In the aftermath of the shooting, Heather Smith was arrested and is facing a slate of serious charges, including second-degree murder, three counts of unlawful use of a weapon, endangering the welfare of a child, and armed criminal action. Investigators reported finding the firearm allegedly used in the shooting at Smith's residence.
