In the early morning hours of June 7, 2023, the life of 36-year-old Monique 'Crystal' Rayner was tragically cut short in Kansas City, Missouri. A Black/African American female, Rayner was discovered inside a vehicle on westbound Interstate 670 near Broadway Boulevard after police responded to what was initially reported as an injury accident around 5:38 a.m. Upon their arrival, officers found that Rayner was suffering from apparent gunshot wounds.
Emergency medical services rushed her to a local hospital, but she was pronounced dead shortly after her arrival.
The investigation into her death caused the closure of the westbound lanes of I-670 for several hours during the morning rush hour as homicide detectives and crime scene personnel processed the scene. Despite the public nature of the location, authorities have not yet identified any suspects or determined a motive for the shooting. The Kansas City Police Department continues to investigate the homicide and has offered a reward of up to $25,000 for information that leads to an arrest in the case.
Rayner's death was the second tragedy to strike her family in a short period. Less than a month prior, her 24-year-old niece, Antoinette 'Libby' Brenson, was fatally shot. Following her niece's death, Rayner had taken on the responsibility of caring for Brenson's three young children. Police have not publicly stated whether the two homicides are connected. Remembered by friends and family as a loving, caring, and beautiful person with an outgoing and fun personality, Monique 'Crystal' Rayner's death remains an unsolved and painful loss for her community.
