In the late hours of a Wednesday night in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, a domestic scene turned tragic, ending the life of 41-year-old Danyelle Dillard. On February 26, 2025, police were called to a residence on Catalpa Drive where they discovered Dillard deceased inside from a gunshot wound. The initial narrative of the event, provided by her relative Hasan Sabir Sabree, was that the shooting was a tragic accident.
Sabree, 46, initially told investigators that he had witnessed Dillard remove
the bullets from the firearm prior to the incident. Believing the gun to be unloaded, he claimed he pointed it at her and pulled the trigger, not expecting it to fire. Based on this account, he was arrested and booked into the East Baton Rouge Parish Prison on charges of negligent homicide and illegal use of a weapon.
However, the investigation took a sharp turn as a witness came forward with a different story. This individual informed detectives that Dillard and Sabree had been engaged in an argument just before the fatal shot was fired. This new testimony cast the incident in a much more sinister light, suggesting a deliberate act rather than a tragic mistake.
With this new information, authorities upgraded Sabree's charges significantly. The negligent homicide charge was elevated to second-degree murder.
