On a festive Fat Tuesday in Mamou, Louisiana, the joyous sounds of a Mardi Gras concert were tragically silenced by gunfire, leaving two teenagers dead and a community in mourning. One of the victims was Alaya Christian, a 17-year-old female who was a beloved student at Lafayette Renaissance Charter High School. The shooting occurred on March 4, 2025, during an outdoor performance by zydeco musician Chris Ardoin.
Witnesses described a chaotic scene as at least 10 gunshots rang out,
causing panic among the hundreds of attendees. In the aftermath, Alaya Christian and another teenager, 17-year-old Bryson Green of Cecilia High School, were found to have been fatally wounded. Twelve other people were also injured in the mass shooting.
Alaya was remembered as a bright and active member of her school community. She was an honor student, a member of the student council, and played on the school's softball team. Her school released a statement expressing their heartbreak, saying her impact was 'immeasurable' and that she would be 'deeply missed.'
In the days following the shooting, a manhunt was launched for the person responsible. The investigation led authorities to Conroe, Texas, a suburb of Houston, where 19-year-old Trea’land Ty’rell Castille was found hiding in an apartment complex. He was arrested on March 8, 2025, by members of the Montgomery County Sheriff's Office, Conroe Police Department, and the U.S. Marshals Gulf Coast Violent Offenders and Fugitive Task Force.
Castille was extradited back to Louisiana and booked into the Evangeline Parish Jail. He faces serious charges in connection with the deadly shooting, including two counts of first-degree murder, ten counts of attempted second-degree murder, and five counts of aggravated assault with a firearm. Investigators also linked him to a separate shooting that occurred in St. Martin Parish in January 2025. While an arrest has been made, the motive for the tragic shooting in Mamou has not been released.
