On the evening of April 30, 2025, Derrick Lamont Ewing, a 51-year-old Black/African American man from Minneapolis, was fatally shot in what was the last of a series of deadly shootings that occurred over a 20-hour period in the city. His death was later ruled a homicide caused by complications from multiple gunshot wounds.
The incident took place shortly before 7:50 p.m. near the intersection of Lake Street and 15th Avenue South.
Ewing was seated with a group of people behind a building when he was approached by a man. According to accounts detailed in the criminal complaint, which referenced surveillance footage, Ewing handed a black bag to the man. As a second individual ran toward them, Ewing turned as if to flee. The man then extended his arms towards Ewing as he ran, and Ewing collapsed in the street. He was transported to Hennepin Healthcare, where he succumbed to his injuries.
Investigators were told by witnesses that the shooting occurred during a robbery. One witness stated that the assailant robbed Ewing of drugs before shooting him. Another witness, a friend of Ewing's, claimed the shots were fired after Ewing said he had nothing for the robber to take. Police recovered several 9mm shell casings at the scene.
On May 6, authorities arrested 39-year-old Mickiah Latrell Jackson of Roseville in connection with the killing. He was subsequently charged with second-degree intentional murder and illegal possession of a firearm. Witnesses identified Jackson from a photo lineup, with one stating they had seen him more than 100 times before. Another witness knew the shooter by the street name "Uncle Mookie" and later identified him as Jackson, stating that Jackson had admitted to the robbery and shooting. Jackson, who has a prior criminal history including a conviction for manslaughter, was held on $1 million bail. Authorities have stated that Ewing's death was not connected to the other homicides that occurred in Minneapolis on the same day.
