Jay Harrison Boughton, aged 56, tragically lost his life on July 6, 2021, in a road rage incident in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Boughton was driving home with his son after a baseball game on Highway 169 in the suburb of Plymouth when he was shot in the head. The incident occurred after Boughton honked and flashed his middle finger at another driver who was speeding and swerving into their lane.
The suspect in this case was identified as Jamal Smith, a 34-year-old man from Chicago.
Smith was accused of dangerous driving and ultimately shooting Boughton. During the trial, it was revealed that Smith's car had been reported by two other drivers for dangerous driving on the same day, including one instance where Smith allegedly pulled a gun on a Wisconsin motorist.
Smith denied seeing Boughton's car and claimed that the shooting was carried out by a backseat passenger. However, the jury found Smith guilty of three counts, including first-degree and second-degree murder, as well as unlawful possession of a firearm. The verdict came after 16 hours of deliberation, during which the jury was initially deadlocked on the first-degree murder charge but eventually reached a unanimous decision.
Boughton's wife, Kristin, and their children, Harrison and Amalie, were deeply affected by the loss. Kristin expressed relief and a sense of justice after the guilty verdict was announced. Smith showed no emotion during the reading of the verdict but was seen wiping his face while looking down.
