In the warm afternoon of August 14, 2022, tragedy struck at a Minneapolis intersection laden with historical significance. Aaron James Rodgers, a 25-year-old Black/African American male from Las Vegas, was fatally shot near the corner of 38th Street East and Chicago Avenue, an area known as George Floyd Square. The incident unfolded at approximately 12:51 p.m., shattering the Sunday peace.
Police were alerted to the violence by the city's ShotSpotter system.
Upon arrival, they discovered a grim scene. Rodgers was found lying near the intersection with life-threatening gunshot wounds. A second man, also in his 20s, was located in a nearby alleyway, having collapsed after being shot and attempting to flee. Both men were in critical condition.
Emergency responders, including police, firefighters, and medics, rendered aid to both victims. They were rushed to Hennepin County Medical Center, but despite their efforts, Aaron James Rodgers succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead about 30 minutes after the shooting. The second victim was left to fight for his life.
In the aftermath of the shooting, Minneapolis police reported that it appeared the suspect or suspects fled the scene on foot. Authorities also expressed concern that crucial evidence, including a gun and shell casings that were initially reported by a 911 caller, had been removed from the scene before officers could secure the area. As of now, no arrests have been made in connection with the homicide, and police have not released any descriptions of potential suspects. The investigation remains ongoing as authorities appeal to the public for any information that could lead to the apprehension of those responsible for Rodgers' death.
