In the late evening of Thursday, January 30, 2025, a burst of gunfire shattered the night at the intersection of Morton Street and West Selden Street in Mattapan. When police and paramedics arrived around 10:30 p.m., they found 18-year-old Leroy S. Ryner of Roxbury suffering from gunshot wounds. The Black / African American male was quickly transported to Boston Medical Center, but his injuries proved to be fatal, and he was pronounced deceased.
Known affectionately as "LJ," Leroy was a
student at Tech Boston Academy. His family remembers him as a kind, loving, and down-to-earth young man with an infectious smile and a knack for making people laugh. He was known as the "FUNNIEST PERSON EVER" to some and was always willing to help others. He enjoyed sports, and video games, and cherished family gatherings, especially the yearly family cruises. His loved ones described his time with them as "heartbreakingly brief" but filled with cherished memories.
The Boston Police Department's Homicide Unit is actively investigating the circumstances surrounding the shooting. As of now, no arrests have been made, and authorities have not released any information about a potential suspect or suspects. Investigators are urging anyone with information to come forward and have provided contact details for the Homicide Unit and an anonymous tip line. The shooting marked the third homicide in the city of Boston in 2025.
