In the early morning hours of October 26, 2019, tragedy struck in the Roxbury neighborhood of Boston when 25-year-old Hamza Warsame, a Black/African American male, was fatally shot. The incident, which also left two other individuals wounded, unfolded on Westminster Avenue. Responding to reports of gunfire around 3:47 a.m., Boston police officers discovered two victims at the scene suffering from gunshot wounds.
Both injured parties were immediately transported to a local hospital for
medical attention. Despite the efforts of medical personnel, Hamza Warsame was pronounced dead. The second victim was treated for life-threatening injuries. A third person, a woman, was later found on Ruthven Street with a non-life-threatening gunshot wound that was determined to be connected to the Westminster Avenue shooting.
The investigation into the triple shooting was ongoing for a period of time before a suspect was identified and apprehended. In December 2019, Boston police arrested James Nelson, a 26-year-old Boston resident, in connection with the fatal shooting. Nelson was subsequently charged with the murder of Hamza Warsame. Reports indicate that Nelson was located and taken into custody in Brockton by homicide detectives. While some initial reports identified Warsame as being from Pasadena, California, later reports associated with the arrest of the suspect identified him as a resident of Medford, Massachusetts.
