A promising young athlete's life was cut tragically short in New Iberia, Louisiana. The male teenager, Rylon Martrel Daniels, was just 14 years old when he was fatally shot on the evening of Saturday, April 12, 2025. The incident occurred near the New Iberia Spanish Festival, which was consequently shut down early.
New Iberia Police were called to the 100 block of West Main Street around 10:00 p.m. following reports of the shooting.
Upon arrival, they discovered Daniels with gunshot wounds. He was quickly transported to a nearby hospital, but unfortunately succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead. In a heart-wrenching twist, his mother received a pocket dial from her son's phone right after the shooting, capturing the chaotic moments.
In the wake of the shooting, a 15-year-old male juvenile was taken into custody. He has since been booked into a juvenile facility on charges of second-degree murder, illegal use of a weapon, and illegal possession of a handgun. The motive for the shooting has not been publicly released.
Rylon was a beloved student and a star athlete at Belle Place Middle School, where he excelled in basketball, football, and track. His family and friends remember him as a kind individual with an infectious laugh and a bright future ahead of him. His death has left his family and the community in shock and mourning, as they grapple with the senseless loss of a young life with so much potential.
