On what should have been a joyous celebration of her 23rd birthday and Mother's Day, Taniya Gray, a Black female, was found shot to death in Southwest Baltimore on Sunday, May 11, 2025. A mother herself to a young daughter, Gray was discovered unresponsive in the backseat of a white Acura in the 4100 block of Mountwood Road at approximately 10:41 a.m.
The tragic incident unfolded after a resident heard gunshots and noticed that the Acura had rolled into her parked car.
Upon looking inside the vehicle, she found Gray and immediately called 911. When police arrived, they found Gray alone in the car. She was transported to a local hospital where she was pronounced dead. The community, described as typically quiet, was shaken by the violence, with neighbors expressing their shock and concern for their own families' safety.
Investigators quickly classified the case as a homicide and began canvassing the area for witnesses and evidence. Eleven days after the shooting, on May 22, 2025, U.S. Marshals arrested 22-year-old Tamal Johnson in connection with Gray's murder. Johnson, identified by police as a repeat violent offender, was taken into custody in the 3000 block of Elizabeth Avenue.
Tamal Johnson has been charged with first-degree murder, second-degree murder, conspiracy, and various firearm offenses. He is currently being held without bail at the Central Booking Intake Facility. Authorities have not released a motive for the shooting. The investigation remains ongoing, and police have urged anyone with information to come forward. Funeral services for Taniya Gray were scheduled for May 28, 2025, with a wake and funeral at Wylie Funeral Home, followed by a burial at King Memorial Park.
