In the spring of 2025, the life of 49-year-old Latasha 'Tasha' White was tragically cut short, leaving her family searching for answers and a community grappling with a complex and disturbing case. White was a female resident of Louisville, Kentucky. The search for Tasha began after she was last seen on April 27 in the Park Hill neighborhood. Family members grew concerned when they found the cameras at her home turned off, which was unusual.
Adding to their unease, her keys were missing, though her car, wallet, ID, and cell phone were all left behind. A missing persons report was filed with the Louisville Metro Police Department on May 1.
The family's worst fears were realized when a body, later identified as Tasha White, was discovered on Newport Road in the Buechel neighborhood, having sustained a fatal gunshot wound. The discovery brought a tragic end to the search for the woman her sister described as 'the life of the party.' The investigation into her death soon pointed to a suspect with a close connection to Tasha.
In July, U.S. Marshals arrested Jamie Shelby in Jeffersonville, Indiana, for the murder of Tasha White. Police revealed that Shelby and White had been in a romantic relationship. He was subsequently charged with murder-domestic violence, robbery, and possession of a handgun by a convicted felon. Following his arrest, Shelby was held on a $1 million bond.
The case took a controversial turn when LMPD Chief Paul Humphrey commented that Tasha White's 'behavior placed her in the position she ultimately ended up in.' The statement drew sharp criticism from White's family and community members, who accused the chief of victim-blaming. In a subsequent press conference, Chief Humphrey apologized to White's family for his 'lack of sensitivity' and clarified his earlier remarks. He revealed a startling development in the case: evidence allegedly showed that at the time of her murder, White and Shelby were on their way to commit another murder together. The chief stated that White was killed with her own gun and that the last evidence of her being alive was security footage showing her taking down surveillance cameras at her home in the early morning hours of April 29. He also noted that in the days leading up to her death, she had purchased dark clothing, which she was wearing when her body was found, believed to be in furtherance of the alleged murder plot. The investigation remains ongoing, with the possibility of additional arrests.
