In the cold of a Fort Wayne, Indiana winter, the life of 54-year-old Dawn Vera Kovach, a Caucasian female, came to a tragic end. On January 23, 2025, her body was discovered in a tent in a wooded area in the 2600 block of Wayne Haven Street. At the time of her death, Kovach was experiencing homelessness. An autopsy later revealed that she had died from multiple gunshot wounds, and her death was officially ruled a homicide, the fourth in Allen County for the year.
Investigators believe she had been killed weeks earlier, around January 3rd, her body remaining undiscovered in her tent until tips led police to her location.
The investigation quickly centered on 37-year-old Jonathon D. Mattix. Authorities had been warned by police in Van Wert, Ohio, that Mattix, who had an outstanding warrant, was in the area and had allegedly claimed to have recently murdered a homeless woman. On January 22, the day before Kovach's body was found, the Allen County Sheriff's Department arrested Mattix on the unrelated warrant. At the time of his arrest, he was found with a loaded revolver. The investigation was further aided by tips from the community. One witness reported hearing Mattix brag about following a woman to her campsite and shooting her in the face.
As detectives delved deeper, a motive began to emerge. A person who lived with Mattix and his mother came forward, telling police that Mattix had complained about Kovach. He claimed that after he had allowed her to shower at their trailer, she had stolen items from them. Mattix allegedly told his housemate, "I took care of that girl." During questioning, Mattix initially denied knowing Kovach but later admitted to having been with her in her tent, though he claimed she was alive when he left. He would later assert that he acted in self-defense.
Forensic testing confirmed that the. 38 caliber handgun found on Mattix at the time of his arrest was the weapon used to kill Dawn Kovach. The evidence against him was substantial. In October of 2025, a jury in Allen County convicted Jonathon Mattix of murder. He faced a sentence of up to 65 years in prison, with the possibility of an additional 20 years for a firearm enhancement charge, bringing a close to the search for justice for Dawn Vera Kovach.
