In the early morning hours of July 5, 2026, chaos erupted in Fort Wayne, Indiana, culminating in the tragic death of 18-year-old Jayla Raquel Davis. A Black female, Jayla was at a gathering in the 1100 block of Greene Street when gunfire broke out at approximately 3:43 a.m. When first responders from the Fort Wayne Fire Department arrived at the chaotic scene, they pronounced her deceased.
The Allen County Coroner's Office later confirmed that Jayla's cause of death was a gunshot wound to the head, and her death was ruled a homicide. She was the 18th homicide victim in Fort Wayne and Allen County in 2026. In addition to the fatality, eight other individuals, four men and four women, sustained non-life-threatening injuries in the shooting and transported themselves to local hospitals.
Jayla was remembered as a vibrant and outspoken young woman who was the life of the party. Having graduated from New Haven High School, she had just completed her first year at Purdue University Fort Wayne, where she was working towards a bright future. She cherished spending time with her extensive family and many friends, who are now left to mourn her sudden and violent death. Her family described her as a loving daughter, sister, and friend who brought laughter and energy wherever she went.
The Fort Wayne Police Department, in conjunction with the Allen County Prosecutor's Office and the Allen County Coroner's Office, is actively investigating the shooting. Authorities have noted that many people at the scene were recording the incident on their phones and have pleaded with the public to come forward with any information or video footage that could aid in the investigation. A reward of up to $5,000 has been offered for any information that leads to an arrest in the case. As of now, no suspects have been publicly identified, and no arrests have been made in connection with the death of Jayla Raquel Davis. The investigation remains ongoing as her family and community await answers and seek justice for her untimely death.
