In Fort Wayne, Indiana, a promising young life was tragically cut short in the late hours of May 9, 2023. Kiera Erin Zepke, a 20-year-old White female, was found behind a residence on Lillie Street, the victim of a fatal shooting. Kiera was remembered as a free spirit with an amazing personality, a loving mother to her son, and a creative individual who enjoyed designing clothing. Her death, the 11th homicide in Fort Wayne and Allen County that year, left her family and friends heartbroken. The investigation into her murder quickly led to a suspect.
The day after the shooting, on May 10, 2023, authorities arrested 38-year-old Steven Atkins in connection with Kiera's death. He was taken into custody without incident and faced a preliminary charge of murder. The subsequent legal proceedings brought some measure of justice for Kiera and her loved ones.
After a three-day jury trial in August 2023, Steven Atkins was found guilty of the murder of Kiera Zepke. In addition to the murder charge, he was also convicted of criminal recklessness with a deadly weapon and a firearms enhancement, ensuring accountability for the violent act that ended a young woman's life. His sentencing was scheduled for October of the same year, concluding a painful chapter for a community mourning a senseless loss.
