In the autumn of 2024, the life of a young Black man, Jahseim JaQuest Tawiia Cherry, was tragically cut short at the age of 22. On the morning of October 20, 2024, at approximately 11:20 a.m., reports of a shooting drew Bridgeport police to the 200 block of Goddard Avenue. There, they discovered Cherry with a gunshot wound to the head.
Emergency services transported the New Haven resident to a local hospital where he was listed in critical condition.
For several days, Cherry fought for his life, but he ultimately succumbed to his injuries. The Bridgeport Police Department later confirmed his passing and extended their condolences to his family and friends.
In the wake of the now-fatal shooting, detectives secured a crime scene on Goddard Avenue between Cogswell Street and Rockland Street. The area was scoured for evidence, and investigators began the arduous process of speaking with potential witnesses. However, authorities have not yet publicly identified any suspect or suspects in connection with the shooting.
The investigation into Jahseim Cherry's death remains active and ongoing. The Bridgeport Police Department is urging anyone with information about the incident to come forward.
