In a quiet corner of Weld County, Colorado, the life of Gerardo Hernandez-Lucio, a 49-year-old Hispanic man from Greeley, was brought to a violent end. Though his body was discovered burning under a bridge in the Stevens Gulch Picnic Area of Larimer County's Poudre Canyon on April 11, 2025, investigators believe he was killed in Weld County several days prior.
The Larimer County Coroner's Office later determined that Hernandez-Lucio had died from a gunshot wound to the head, officially ruling his death a homicide. The grim discovery by the Poudre Canyon Volunteer Fire Department set in motion a multi-county investigation that would soon unravel a story of alleged murder and a desperate attempt to conceal it.
The investigation quickly led authorities to three individuals who were known to be acquainted with Hernandez-Lucio. The first suspect to be apprehended was 32-year-old Isaac Valdez-Salvador of Fort Collins. His arrest was anything but routine. On April 14, after a high-speed chase with law enforcement that reached speeds of over 100 miles per hour, Valdez-Salvador's vehicle became disabled. He then attempted to flee on foot across Interstate 25, where he was struck by a vehicle. After being hospitalized for his injuries, he was taken into custody.
Following Valdez-Salvador's dramatic capture, two other suspects were arrested in connection with the homicide. Juana Espino, a 37-year-old from Evans, and 27-year-old Monica Lopez-Silva were also taken into custody. As the case is being prosecuted in the 19th Judicial District, which includes Weld County, the three suspects face a range of serious charges. Valdez-Salvador is charged with first-degree murder, conspiracy to commit first-degree murder, tampering with a deceased human body, motor vehicle theft, vehicular eluding, and tampering with evidence. Espino faces charges of first-degree murder, conspiracy to commit first-degree murder, unlawful purchase of firearms, and tampering with evidence. Lopez-Silva has been charged with accessory to a crime and tampering with evidence. All three are being held at the Weld County Jail as the investigation continues.
