In the early morning hours of February 15, 2025, the life of 14-year-old Jamarj Acoff was tragically cut short by gun violence in Selma, Alabama. An African American male, Jamarj was a freshman at Selma High School, a member of the class of 2028, and known for his friendly nature. The fatal incident occurred at approximately 1:55 a.m. in the 1400 block of Weaver Street.
When Selma police officers arrived at the scene, they discovered the young teen had already succumbed to his injuries.
The Selma Police Department's Criminal Investigation Division immediately launched a homicide investigation into the shooting. Their efforts led to a swift arrest later that same day. At around 12:20 p.m., a 17-year-old African American male was taken into custody in connection with Jamarj's death. The teenage suspect was subsequently charged with murder and is being held without bond at the Perry County Detention Center, awaiting a hearing. While an arrest has been made, the motive behind the shooting remains unclear as the investigation continues.
Jamarj, born on March 2, 2010, in Selma to Joe and Danielle Acoff, was remembered as a cherished son and a caring brother. His untimely passing left a significant void in the lives of his family, friends, and the broader Selma community. In the wake of the tragedy, Selma City Schools organized grief counseling services to support students and staff members affected by the loss of their fellow student. A celebration of his life was held on March 1, 2025, at Ellwood Community Church, followed by his burial at Serenity Memorial Gardens.
