In the early hours of a weekend morning in Selma, Alabama, the life of Marcus Dewayne Hatcher, a 38-year-old Black man, was brought to a sudden and violent end. The shooting occurred on Saturday, November 27, 2021, marking the city’s 22nd homicide of the year.
At approximately 1:30 a.m., officers with the Selma Police Department responded to a call reporting a gunshot victim at the Sports Bar, located on the 1800 block of Selma Avenue. When police arrived, they found Mr.
Hatcher inside the establishment. He had been shot and was pronounced deceased at the scene from his injuries.
The homicide was one of two that took place in Selma within a five-hour period that weekend, prompting a public appeal for information from law enforcement. Investigators believed there were patrons in the bar at the time of the shooting who could provide crucial details about what happened. Police Chief Kenta Fulford stated, “We’re hoping that patrons of that bar at that time would come forth and give us a statement.”
