On the evening of March 3, 2025, a dispute between neighbors at a Huntsville, Alabama apartment complex culminated in the shooting death of 53-year-old Demetrius Jones. The incident occurred just after 6 p.m. at the Belmont Hill Apartments on Martin Road, where Jones was found with gunshot wounds in the doorway of his apartment and was pronounced dead at the scene.
The male victim's death brought a tragic end to what investigators would later describe as an ongoing dispute spanning several months with a fellow resident.
Responding to the shooting, Huntsville Police quickly identified a suspect, 22-year-old Byron Alexander Peterson, who also resided in the same apartment complex. Investigators determined that an argument between Peterson and Jones had escalated, leading to the fatal shooting. Peterson was located in a nearby apartment shortly after the incident and was taken into custody. Subsequently, he was arrested and charged with murder. On April 29, 2025, a Madison County judge dismissed the murder case against him. Court records indicate that the judge found a lack of probable cause to proceed with the charge. Following the dismissal, the investigation into the death of Demetrius Jones was reported to be ongoing, with police initially seeking additional witnesses or security camera footage that might provide further insight into the events of that fatal evening.
