On October 17, 1975, nine-year-old Shirley Jane Rose was abducted while walking from her grandmother's home at 865 S. West to her own residence at 1309 S. Scenic Avenue in Springfield, Missouri. Shirley was last seen between 6:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. on Scenic Avenue, speaking to an unidentified male in a blue Chevrolet car.
