On the evening of December 3, 2022, a tragedy unfolded at a residence on West Whiteside Street in Springfield, Missouri. At approximately 7:03 p.m., the Springfield Police Department received a distressing 911 call reporting that two individuals inside the home were suffering from gunshot wounds. Officers hurried to the scene at 731 West Whiteside Street, where they entered the property to find a grim discovery.
Inside the home lay the bodies of two deceased individuals, one of whom was 45-year-old Hispanic female Christina M. Lopez.
Detectives from the Springfield Homicide Unit immediately launched an investigation to piece together the events that led to the violence. The scene was secured and examined for evidence, which soon pointed to a domestic incident rather than a random act of violence. The investigation determined that the second individual found in the home, identified as 44-year-old Lavare W. D. Everett, was the perpetrator. Evidence at the scene indicated that Everett had fatally shot Lopez before turning the weapon on himself.
Authorities officially classified the case as a murder-suicide. Because the sole suspect, Everett, died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound at the scene, there were no arrests made, nor were there any subsequent criminal charges or trials. The Springfield Police Department confirmed that they were not looking for any other suspects in connection with the deaths. Families of both Lopez and Everett were notified of the findings, bringing a somber close to what was recorded as the city's 17th homicide investigation of that year.
