On the afternoon of April 18, 2023, the quiet of a residential neighborhood in Springfield, Missouri, was broken by the sound of gunfire, prompting a concerned call to local law enforcement. At approximately 3:58 p.m., officers from the Springfield Police Department were dispatched to a home located in the 2100 block of South Florence Avenue to conduct a well-being check regarding a female resident.
Upon their arrival at the scene, investigators entered the residence and discovered a tragic scene involving two deceased individuals.
Authorities identified the female victim as 62-year-old Donna J. Spellmeier. The investigation, led by the department's Homicide Unit, determined that she had been fatally shot inside her home. Beside her, officers found a male subject who was also deceased. The ensuing inquiry revealed that the two individuals were known to each other, establishing a familial relationship between the victim and the perpetrator.
The police investigation identified the suspect as 33-year-old Keith Spellmeier, the son of the victim, who had reportedly traveled to the residence from Harrison, Arkansas. Detectives concluded that Keith had shot and killed his mother before turning the weapon on himself, dying from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. The case was classified by the Springfield Police Department as a murder-suicide, and with the death of the sole suspect, no arrests were made or criminal charges filed in connection with the homicide.
