On a quiet morning in Springfield, Missouri, 40-year-old Joshua S. Brooks was found deceased in the driver's seat of his car at the bottom of a dead-end street on September 10, 2018. An investigation into his death would soon unravel the events of the preceding night, revealing a movie date that took a fatal turn.
The evening before his body was discovered, Brooks had gone to see a movie with Christina Duckett. After the film, the two drove to a secluded, dead-end street. It was there that Brooks was shot three times in the head at close range. His family grew concerned when he stopped responding to text messages late that night.
Detectives investigating the homicide identified Duckett as the woman who was with Brooks through his text messages and surveillance footage from the movie theater. During an interview with police, Duckett acknowledged she had been with Brooks for the movie but asserted that he was alive when she departed. However, electronic evidence contradicted her statement, placing her in the area where Brooks's car was found between 12:04 a.m. and 12:37 a.m. A crucial piece of evidence against her was the discovery that she possessed the same caliber and brand of ammunition that was used to kill Brooks.
In November 2019, a Greene County jury found Christina Duckett guilty of murder in the second degree and armed criminal action. After a trial that presented compelling physical and electronic evidence, the jury deliberated for approximately five hours before reaching its verdict. For her role in the death of Joshua Brooks, Duckett faced a sentence of up to life in prison. Her sentencing was scheduled for January 10, 2020.
