In the late summer of 1989, a dark chapter began to unfold in Kansas City, Missouri, with the discovery of 33-year-old Annette Stewart's body on September 16th near 31st and Oak streets. This tragic event marked the beginning of a string of murders that would terrorize the city and leave a lasting scar on the community. Annette's death was not an isolated incident but the first in a series of brutal killings that targeted women in the area.
Over the next seven months, the sense of fear in Kansas City intensified as the bodies of five more women were found in and around the Gillham Park area. The victims, much like Annette Stewart, were often found strangled, their lives cut short by a predator who lurked in the city's shadows. Investigators worked tirelessly to connect the dots between the escalating number of homicides, realizing they were dealing with a serial killer. The community, particularly vulnerable women, lived in a state of heightened anxiety as the Gillham Park Strangler continued his deadly spree.
The reign of terror came to an end in April 1990, when a man named Ray Shawn Jackson was taken into custody. His arrest was the culmination of an intense investigation that led authorities to identify him as the man responsible for the string of murders. Following his apprehension, Jackson confessed to the killings of Annette Stewart and the five other women. To avoid a potential death sentence, he pleaded guilty to six counts of first-degree murder and one count of first-degree assault for a surviving victim. Ray Shawn Jackson was subsequently sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole, bringing a close to the case that had held Kansas City in its grip. He is currently incarcerated at the South Central Correctional Center.
