In the spring of 2016, a promising young woman's life was cut tragically short in Kansas City, Missouri. Tyra T. Brown, a 19-year-old female from Overland Park, Kansas, was fatally wounded by a stray bullet on April 17, 2016. She was a recent graduate of Olathe East High School and was studying at Johnson County Community College with dreams of becoming a pediatric nurse. Described by a former teacher as 'shy, astute, thoughtful, determined, gracious and unbelievably talented,' Tyra was known for her beautiful singing voice and her kind, compassionate nature. She was an active member of her church's praise team and would often visit the elderly to brighten their day.
On the night she was shot, Tyra had driven her cousin to a large house party in the 4500 block of Elmwood Avenue. She remained in her car, waiting for her cousin, when a fight broke out at the party and shots were fired. Tyra was struck in the head by a bullet while sitting in the driver's seat. After being driven to the hospital by some of her friends, she fought for her life for nine days before succumbing to her injuries on April 26, 2016. Her death marked the 30th homicide in Kansas City that year.
The investigation into Tyra's murder has been met with significant challenges, and the case remains unsolved. Although many people were present at the party, few have come forward with information. Police believe they know who is responsible for the shooting, but without witness cooperation to confirm that the person of interest fired the fatal shot, they have been unable to make an arrest. The multitude of bullets fired at the scene has made it difficult to pinpoint the exact origin of the shot that killed Tyra.
Tyra's family continues to grieve their profound loss and advocate for justice. Her mother, Tasha Brown, remembers her as a 'ball of energy' and a 'joy' who loved people deeply. The family holds onto the memory of a loving and God-fearing young woman who touched the lives of many in her short time. In her honor, friends and family initiated 'Tyra Tuesdays,' a weekly effort to encourage and inspire others, keeping her compassionate spirit alive. Authorities continue to ask for anyone with information regarding the shooting to come forward.
