On October 8, 1974, Laura Louise McClendon, a 22-year-old African American woman, was brutally murdered in her Fort Worth, Texas apartment. The perpetrator, Kenneth Granviel, was a family acquaintance who had known the McClendon family for approximately three years. On the evening of the crime, Granviel entered the apartment under the pretense of visiting and requesting a glass of water. Once inside, he produced a knife and initiated a series of heinous acts.
Granviel bound and gagged Laura McClendon and her two-year-old son, Steven, using torn bedsheets. As he was assaulting Laura, other family members arrived: her sister Martha McClendon cousin Linda McClendon and Martha's daughter Natasha. Granviel proceeded to bind and gag the newcomers as well. He then raped Laura and, during the attack, fatally stabbed Natasha when she began to cry. Subsequently, he strangled Linda, stabbed Steven multiple times until his knife broke, and then used another knife to continue his assault on Laura, ultimately killing her. After conversing with Martha, he also stabbed her to death. Granviel then stole money and valuables from the victims' purses before fleeing the scene.
The bodies were discovered when the family's stepfather arrived to take the women to work. Initially, two Mexican nationals were wrongfully arrested for the crime. Granviel, despite his close relationship with the family, was not considered a suspect and even discussed the murders with acquaintances, expressing that the perpetrator "ought to be hung." It wasn't until February 1975, after Granviel committed additional murders, that he was apprehended. He confessed to the killings and was subsequently convicted of capital murder. Granviel was executed by lethal injection in February 1996.
