Stephanie Kirk, a 35-year-old woman from Charlestown, Indiana, disappeared on March 25, 2012, after she was last seen at the Uptown Bar in New Albany. Her family reported her missing, launching an investigation into her whereabouts. The search for Stephanie came to a tragic end on April 27, 2012, when her remains were discovered buried in the backyard of a home in New Albany. The grim discovery was made at the residence of William Clyde Gibson, a man who would later be identified as a serial killer.
The investigation into Kirk's disappearance became intertwined with another murder case when Gibson was arrested in connection with the death of 75-year-old Christine Whitis, whose body was found in his garage on April 19, 2012. During questioning, Gibson not only confessed to killing Whitis but also admitted to the murder of Karen Hodella, a cold case from 2002. He then led investigators to the spot in his yard where he had buried Stephanie Kirk.
He revealed to authorities that after a day of taking drugs and engaging in sexual activity, he and Kirk had an argument over pills, which led to him raping and strangling her. An autopsy later confirmed that Kirk died of strangulation and had also suffered a broken back.
In May 2012, William Clyde Gibson was formally charged with the murder of Stephanie Kirk. In a surprising turn of events, just as his trial was set to begin in June 2014, Gibson pleaded guilty to Kirk's murder. This plea waived his right to a jury trial for sentencing, leaving the decision to a judge. Despite his confession being a key factor in locating Kirk's body, the brutality of the crime led prosecutors to seek the death penalty. In August 2014, a judge sentenced Gibson to death for the murder of Stephanie Kirk. This was the second death sentence for Gibson, who had already been condemned for the murder of Christine Whitis. He also received a 65-year prison sentence for the murder of Karen Hodella.
