On a summer evening in New Haven, Connecticut, the life of John-Claude James, a 26-year-old African American man, was tragically cut short. On July 9, 2011, near the intersection of Howard Avenue and Putnam Street, James was fatally shot in the chest during what police would later describe as a street robbery gone bad.
