On the evening of Thursday, August 27, 2026, the sounds of gunfire shattered the late summer peace in a New Haven, Connecticut neighborhood. Around 6:36 p.m., police were alerted by the ShotSpotter notification system to shots fired near the intersection of Judson Avenue and Mead Street. Simultaneously, dispatchers began to receive 911 calls reporting that a man had been shot in the backyard of a residence on Judson Avenue.
When officers arrived at the scene, they found 21-year-old Garnet Beckford lying on the ground, suffering from a gunshot wound. Emergency medical personnel transported him by ambulance to Yale-New Haven Hospital. Initially, his injuries were described as non-life-threatening, but his condition took a turn for the worse at the hospital, where he was soon listed as critical.
Just a few minutes after the initial calls came in, a second victim connected to the same shooting incident arrived at the emergency department of the same hospital by his own means. This individual, a 24-year-old man from the nearby town of East Haven, had also sustained a gunshot wound, though his injuries were determined to be non-life-threatening. While the second victim was in stable condition, Beckford fought for his life for two days. Detectives from the New Haven Police Department's Major Crimes Unit took charge of the investigation. They believed from the outset that the shooting was not a random act of violence and that there was likely a connection between the individuals involved.
