Leslie N. Patrick, a 29-year-old male police officer in Dallas, Texas, died on June 11, 1901. Officer Patrick was attempting to arrest a man for stealing a horse when a struggle ensued. During the altercation, the suspect pulled out a handgun and struck Officer Patrick on the head with it, causing the weapon to discharge and fatally wound him. He was transported to his home and later to the hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries two days later.
The suspect involved in the incident was initially sentenced to 40 years in prison for the shooting of Officer Patrick. However, in a subsequent trial, the sentence was reduced to five years for the shooting and an additional two years for the horse theft. Officer Patrick had served with the Dallas Police Department for only one year and was survived by his brother and sister. He was laid to rest in Edgewood Cemetery in Lancaster, Texas.
