In the late hours of a summer Tuesday in West Dallas, a violent confrontation outside a shopping plaza set in motion a tragic chain of events that would end a young life. On August 4, 2026, 21-year-old Jose Hernandez was involved in an altercation with another driver in a parking lot at the corner of Singleton Boulevard and North Hampton Road. The dispute escalated, and shots were fired. In the aftermath, both vehicles sped away from the scene. Hernandez, driving his truck, was grievously wounded.

Presumably losing consciousness from a gunshot wound, Hernandez continued to drive for about a mile. His truck eventually left the road and plunged into the waters of Fishtrap Lake, located near Interstate 30 and Hampton Road. Around 11:30 p.m., multiple 911 calls reported a submerged vehicle. Dallas police officers were the first to arrive and bravely entered the water in an attempt to rescue the driver. Once the vehicle was reached, emergency crews discovered that Hernandez had sustained a gunshot wound and was pronounced dead at the scene.

The investigation into the shooting and Hernandez's subsequent death moved swiftly. Dallas police detectives worked the case, and their efforts quickly led them to a suspect. Two days after the fatal incident, on August 6, 2026, authorities arrested 21-year-old Jacob Sherif in connection with the death of Jose Hernandez. Sherif was taken into custody and booked into the Dallas County Jail, facing a charge of murder. The investigation remains ongoing as authorities continue to piece together the full scope of the events that led to the untimely death of Jose Hernandez.
