Senior Corporal Norman Stephen Allen Smith, aged 43, was a dedicated officer with the Dallas Police Department. On January 6, 2009, he was tragically shot and killed while attempting to serve an arrest warrant for aggravated assault. Corporal Smith and several members of the Gang Unit went to a home on Wadsworth Drive in Dallas to execute the warrant. When he knocked on the front door, he was immediately shot by the suspect inside. Despite the efforts of his fellow officers to pull him to safety, Corporal Smith succumbed to his injuries.
The Dallas Police SWAT team was able to make entry into the apartment and arrest three suspects, including the suspected shooter. The shooter was later convicted and sentenced to life in prison. Corporal Smith had served with the Dallas Police Department for 18 years and was assigned to the Gang Unit. He was also a veteran of the United States Marine Corps. His murder occurred on the day before his 18th anniversary with the department.
Corporal Smith is survived by his wife, who also serves with the Dallas Police Department, and two children. His death was a significant loss to the department and the community, as he was known for his extensive knowledge of Dallas' gangs and his dedication to his job. Flags were flown at half-staff at Dallas police headquarters in honor of his service and sacrifice.
