Posseman Edward C. Smith, a 27-year-old male, was tragically killed on August 9, 1902, in Columbia, Texas. Smith, who was assisting a sheriff's deputy, was involved in an attempt to arrest a man for carrying a pistol. Upon learning that the man was armed, the deputy formed a posse that included county attorney Ed Smith. As they attempted to arrest the man, one of his friends opened fire, striking the deputy in the wrist and Posseman Smith in the chest.
Smith succumbed to his wounds the following morning.
The incident led to the apprehension of both the armed man and his friend, who were subsequently returned to the county jail. However, on the night of January 14, 1903, an angry mob of citizens stormed the county jail and fatally shot both prisoners. This act of vigilante justice brought an end to the immediate suspects involved in the death of Posseman Edward C. Smith.
Smith was survived by his mother and several siblings. His death highlighted the dangers faced by law enforcement officers during that era and the extreme measures sometimes taken by communities in response to perceived injustices.
