Posseman Edward C. Smith, a 27-year-old male, was tragically killed on August 9, 1902, in Columbia, Texas. Smith, who was assisting a sheriff's deputy, was involved in an attempt to arrest a man for carrying a pistol. Upon learning that the man was armed, the deputy formed a posse that included county attorney Ed Smith.
