On March 9, 2024, at approximately 3:55 a.m., Harris County Sheriff's deputies responded to a reported vehicle crash in the 15100 block of Golden Eagle Drive near Humble, Texas. Upon arrival, they discovered 17-year-old Darnell "DC" Cotton deceased in the driver's seat of a black sedan, having sustained apparent gunshot wounds.
Investigations revealed that the black sedan had been reported stolen earlier from a nearby apartment complex.
The vehicle's owner, 30-year-old Dushawn Caples, reported that upon discovering the theft, he pursued the stolen car using his wife's gray SUV. Caples admitted to chasing the vehicle and, when the driver refused to stop, firing multiple shots into the sedan, resulting in Cotton's fatal injuries and causing the car to crash into a parked vehicle.
Following the incident, Caples was arrested and charged with murder. He was booked into the Harris County Jail, where he awaited further legal proceedings.
Darnell Jamal Cotton, known affectionately as "DC," was born on November 16, 2006, in Houston, Texas. He was a student at Summer Creek High School, expected to graduate in May 2025. Darnell was known for his charming personality and had aspirations of becoming an engineer in the oilfield industry. He is survived by his parents, Shantal S. Harris and Darrell J. Cotton, along with numerous siblings, grandparents, and extended family members.
Funeral services for Darnell were held on March 23, 2024, at Boyd Funeral Directors of Texas in Houston, where family and friends gathered to honor his memory and celebrate his life.
