Barrett Michael Shirley, a 23-year-old male from Kingwood, Texas, tragically passed away on September 5, 2014, in Harris County. Born on May 1, 1991, in Houston, Texas, Barrett was the son of Randall Scott Shirley and Kimberly Ann Scott Shirley. He attended Kingwood High School and was employed as a lab technician at Geo Science in Houston at the time of his death.
On the night of September 5, 2014, Barrett Shirley was fatally shot in front of a residence in the Elm Grove subdivision in
Humble, Texas. According to the Houston Police Department, Barrett was shot outside the residence and then ran inside, where he collapsed and was pronounced dead at the scene. Neighbors reported hearing a "pop" sound, which they initially thought was fireworks, and saw a car speeding away from the scene.
Following an investigation by the Houston Police Department, 18-year-old Hunter Ryan Hamilton Woods of Kingwood was identified as a suspect in the shooting. Woods was arrested on September 19, 2014, and charged with the murder of Barrett Shirley. He was booked into the Harris County Jail on a $50,000 bond. The investigation revealed that Woods had shot Barrett Shirley in front of the residence on Garden Village Drive.
On November 25, 2014, a Harris County grand jury indicted Hunter Ryan Hamilton Woods for the murder of Barrett Shirley. Woods remained in the Harris County Jail since his arrest. The motive for the shooting was not released by the authorities. Following a trial and deliberation, Woods was found guilty of murdering Barrett Shirley and was sentenced to 25 years in prison.
