Railroad Detective Charles L. Stewart, aged 27, was shot and killed on August 13, 1908, while patrolling the train yard of the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railroad in Amarillo, Texas. Stewart, who had served with the railroad police for 15 months, was shot in the head by an individual hiding in a boxcar as he approached the train.
