Heather Coglaiti, a 33-year-old woman from Corpus Christi, Texas, tragically lost her life on February 3, 2015. Heather, a mother of three, was shot dead by her ex-boyfriend, 46-year-old Jose Calderon, in a murder-suicide. The incident occurred just hours after Heather sought police protection against Calderon, who had been harassing her following the end of their relationship.
Heather had filed seven complaints against Calderon in the month leading up to her death, reporting incidents of tire slashing, threatening text messages, and other forms of harassment. Despite her pleas for help, Calderon was released after a 37-minute interview with the police, during which he denied ever threatening Heather and accused her of being the aggressor. Approximately 16 hours later, Calderon forced his way into Heather's apartment in Flour Bluff, shot her brother, and then shot Heather before turning the gun on himself. Heather's brother survived the gunshot wound and was taken to a hospital in stable condition. Heather's two young daughters were in another room at the time of the shooting and were not injured. The tragic incident highlighted the severe consequences of domestic violence and the limitations of the legal system in providing adequate protection for victims. Heather's death serves as a stark reminder of the importance of addressing domestic violence and ensuring that victims receive the support and protection they need.
