On April 14, 2023, at approximately 4:20 a.m., Corpus Christi police responded to reports of gunshots on the 1800 block of Kentucky Derby Drive. Upon arrival, officers discovered two individuals lying deceased in the street: 33-year-old Michelle Mungia and 44-year-old Jose Gonzalez. The Nueces County Medical Examiner's Office later identified the deceased.
Investigators determined that Gonzalez fatally shot Mungia before taking his own life, classifying the incident as a murder-suicide stemming from domestic violence. The relationship between Mungia and Gonzalez was not detailed in the reports, but authorities treated the case as an instance of domestic violence.
In the aftermath of this tragedy, Mungia's family organized funeral services to honor her memory. Visitation was held on April 23, 2023, at Corpus Christi Funeral Home, followed by a funeral service on April 24, 2023. She was interred at Rose Hill Memorial Park. Mungia is survived by her three children, parents, siblings, and extended family members.
To assist with funeral expenses, family friend Shelly Bigelow initiated a GoFundMe campaign, highlighting Mungia's devotion to her children and the family's need for support during this difficult time.
