Patrick Terrence Whalen, a 33-year-old survivalist and registered nurse, was last seen on November 2, 2000, in Glacier National Park, Montana. Originally from Cleveland, Ohio, but living in Portland, Oregon, at the time, Whalen was planning to become a naturopathic doctor. Described as an experienced outdoorsman who had hiked thousands of miles and spent significant time in national parks, he had been exploring the Glacier Park area, Blackfeet tribal lands, and Columbia Falls for several weeks before his disappearance.
Whalen's vehicle was later found at the Lake McDonald Lodge Restaurant near U.S. Highway 89 and State Highway 49. Seven months later, on May 27, 2001, a park ranger discovered his abandoned campsite near Cut Bank Creek at the Atlantic Creek Backcountry Campground.
The site appeared untouched since the previous fall, and personal belongings of Whalen were located, but no clues to his whereabouts were found. At the time of his disappearance, Whalen was reportedly struggling with mental health issues, including paranoia and obsessive behavior.
