Daren Newell Dixon, a 20-year-old student at Taylor University, was last seen on July 4, 1993, in or near Yellowstone National Park, Montana. He was working for his second summer as a busboy at the Roosevelt Lodge within the park. Dixon, whose off-season home was in Selma, Indiana, had abruptly quit his job on July 2, 1993, without providing a reason. Following his disappearance, he was reportedly seen by friends in Cooke City, Montana.
Sometime after his last sighting, Dixon's vehicle was discovered parked at a pullout for the Lamar River Canyon. Inside the car, investigators found his wallet and some of his other personal belongings. However, his fishing equipment was noted to be missing from the vehicle.
This detail, combined with Dixon's known passion for fishing, led authorities to believe that he may have accidentally drowned in the Lamar River.
An extensive search operation was launched and continued for the remainder of the summer, but no trace of Dixon was ever found. In September 1993, his family proceeded to publish an obituary for him. A scholarship was later established in his memory. Born in Raymond, Nebraska, Dixon had moved to Indiana as a teenager, graduating from Burris High School in Muncie in 1991.
