On September 6, 2024, 25-year-old Kiara Allani Smith was found deceased in her home on Green Earth Drive in Corpus Christi, Texas. Her roommates reported hearing gunshots around 3:20 a.m. and discovered Smith with a fatal gunshot wound. They immediately contacted the Corpus Christi Police Department, who responded to the scene and initiated an investigation.
The primary suspect in Smith's death is her 22-year-old boyfriend, Devaughan Marquise Williams.
Williams turned himself in to the Nueces County Jail later that day. Prior to this incident, Williams had a documented history of violence against Smith. In June 2023, he was arrested for assaulting her while she was pregnant, resulting in a third-degree felony charge. He pleaded guilty in February 2024 and was sentenced to six years of deferred adjudication, which included requirements to attend anger management and parenting classes, along with a curfew.
Despite these legal interventions, Williams continued to engage in violent behavior. In November 2023, he was arrested for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon after threatening his sister with a firearm and attempting to choke her. He pleaded guilty to this charge as well and received another six-year deferred adjudication sentence, to run concurrently with his previous probation. Notably, the presiding judge did not mandate that Williams stay away from Smith, nor were his cases referred to a specialized domestic violence court.
Following Smith's death, Judge Nanette Hasette, who had overseen Williams's prior cases, recused herself from the current proceedings. The case was reassigned to Judge Susan Barclay. Williams remains in custody without bond, facing a murder charge for the death of Kiara Smith.
Smith's tragic death has highlighted systemic issues in handling domestic violence cases, particularly concerning the enforcement of protective measures and the effectiveness of probationary sentences in preventing repeat offenses. The community continues to mourn the loss of a young mother whose life was cut short by ongoing domestic violence.
